Halifax Regional Police say the death of a 19-year-old international student at Dalhousie University last month was caused by alcohol poisoning.

Police were called to a medical emergency at a university residence on LeMarchant Street around 3:20 a.m. on Nov. 13.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say an autopsy was conducted the same day, but the cause of death was not immediately obvious and additional testing was needed.

After additional testing, the medical examiner has determined the cause of death was ethanol intoxication, or alcohol poisoning.

Police say the woman “consumed a substantial amount of alcohol in a short period of time.”

"It's a tragic event," said Const. Dianne Woodworth. "We're so sorry for this young lady, her family, her friends, the Dal community, and our community and we just wanted to bring some recognition to the fact that these things can happen and for people to be careful."

Foul play has been ruled out in her death and police have concluded their investigation.

The woman’s name will not be released, at the request of her family.
