Joe Markey is getting daily updates about his daughter Kenzie.

The 32-year-old Nova Scotia native was skydiving in Arizona two weeks ago when her parachute collapsed.

“She’s had moments of really clear consciousness since,”  explains Markey. “And moments of not responding. She’s run the whole gamut."

Kenzie had done about 20 jumps that week and tried to squeeze in one more before flying back to Canada.

“She’s strong,” adds Kenzie’s mother, Sherry MacKenzie-Jennison. “She’s strong willed, so that’s going to help her get through it.”

Kenzie’s mother and brother are by her side at a hospital in Phoenix. They say she suffered several injuries.

“Broken femur, broken pelvis, broken elbow and she broke on the right side her facial bones and her nose," says MacKenzie-Jennison.

Markey says getting his daughter back to Canada has its own challenges.

“The figure keeps jumping around,” he says. “It started out at $25,000 to $30,000. Now it could be as high as $45,000.”

The cost to travel home doesn’t include medical bills. The last estimate was $500,000.

Kenzie bought travel insurance, but it doesn’t cover injuries from extreme sports.

Fundraising efforts are underway in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley and one of Kenzie’s childhood friends quickly stepped forward to help out the family.

“She taught me how to drive a standard,” says friend Erin Olejnik.

Olejnik says it’s one of the many special memories she made with Kenzie growing up together.

“She made me sit there and do it over and over again until I could go up the hill and shift, which is very hard, but she’s very determined."

Olejnik says she is now determined to help her childhood friend and is organizing a dance and silent auction at the Middletown Legion on May 31.

“It’s going to be a donation at the door,” Olejnik explains. “You know, give what you can of course, and if you can give generously, if you’re able, that’s appreciated.”

Donations can also be made at any branch of the Valley Credit Union under “Kenzie Markey Medical Fund.”

Out West, an online fundraising campaign has raised more than $14,000 so far.

The family is hoping Kenzie will be back in Canada within a few days.
