A 55-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault after a man was sent to hospital with serious injuries.

Fredericton Police responded to an apartment building on the city’s north side after 9 a.m. Sunday. Police say the building is run by the John Howard Society and two tenants were involved in an altercation.

Officers contained the area around the apartment building and remained on scene for most of the day Sunday.

Police say one man was taken into custody and another was sent to the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital with serious injuries.

He was later transferred to the trauma centre in Saint John.

“It was certainly a serious assault and when you’re looking at an aggravated assault, the Criminal Code defines that as the nature of the injuries have to be to the effect or the extent of wounding, maiming or endangering the life, so you’re talking significant injuries,” says Fredericton Police Staff Sgt. Matt Myers.

John Munroe made a brief court appearance Monday morning. He will remain in custody until Tuesday when he is due back in court.
