Santa’s sleigh may be a little lighter this Christmas after a pair of Grinches smashed their way into a Halifax-area store that specializes in remote control cars, trucks, airplanes and helicopters.

Storeowner Geoff Davis was called to Mighty Small Cars on Windmill Road in Dartmouth where it appears thieves used a large vehicle to smash their way into the store before 5:30 a.m. Monday.

“It’s an awful image to be faced with first thing in the morning,” says Davis.

The kits are priced from $100 to $500. Davis estimates 12 to 15 kits were stolen.

“A check of the interior revealed several thousand dollars of remote control cars were stolen,” says Const. Pierre Bourdages of the Halifax Regional Police.

Davis says this isn’t the first time thieves broke into Mighty Small Cars. He says two robberies took place at the store in March.

Davis had bars installed after the previous incidents, but it wasn’t enough to stop the thieves Monday morning.

“You can’t really protect yourself from a car driving through your business or your house,” says Bourdages.

With each robbery, the thieves took the same products.

“No airplanes,” says Davis. “They only took (remote control) trucks.”

Police have video surveillance recordings, but little evidence.

“An early review of video surveillance shows there are two suspects, but no description at this time,” says Bourdages.

Davis still has enough inventory to carry him and his customers over Christmas.

“I had a lot of inventory for Christmas. They just grabbed the stuff on the front shelf, which was one of each of the different models I have,” says Davis.

Davis says he is more disappointed than angry about the theft.

He also says the shop is secure once again and that a security guard will now be watching it.
