Two Maritime ports have been chosen as sites for pilot projects aimed at boosting tanker safety in the region.

New tanker spill response plans will be developed for the Saint John and Post Hawkesbury areas. For the first time, those plans will take into account unique environmental and navigational challenges.

“This takes into consideration certain factors,” says Saint John MP Rodney Weston. “In Saint John and the Bay of Fundy, we have the highest tides in the world.”

He adds that the Bay of Fundy has been a shipping route for decades without a major tanker accident.

Tanker traffic in the area is expected to increase if the Energy East Pipeline links Alberta with the Port of Saint John.
