A 17-year-old girl has been arrested for impaired driving after a car left the road and sailed off a cliff in Sydney Mines, N.S.

Cape Breton Regional Police responded to the crash off Shore Road around 1:54 a.m. Monday.

The car ended up on its side in the shallow water below the cliff.

Police say the three people inside the vehicle – one male and two females – escaped with only minor injuries.

They managed to get out of the vehicle and climb back up the embankment before first responders arrived on scene.

They were taken to hospital and have since been released.

Area resident Morton McKinnon says he's amazed the teens weren't seriously injured.

"There's big rocks, big boulders," says McKinnon. "They're half the size of a car, so to tumble over that and not get hurt and break that guardrail all to pieces, pretty amazing."

The vehicle sustained extensive damage.

The driver was arrested for impaired driving and is due in court at a later date.
