A 17-year-old boy who was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Dartmouth man has been released without charges.

Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Spring Avenue and Mount Edward Road in Dartmouth around 5:20 a.m. on March 29.

When officers arrived, they found 20-year-old Joseph Douglas Cameron dead on the sidewalk. His death has been ruled a homicide.

Police arrested a teen in connection with the case around 8:30 a.m. Thursday at a residence on Spring Avenue.

However, the teen was released without charges at 7 p.m.

As police continue to investigate Cameron’s death, his family is hoping for closure.

“It’s kind of surreal, like it never happened. You know, you get your moments when you break down,” says Cameron’s stepmother, April Miners. “I’m not going to get my hopes up.”

Cameron’s homicide has been added to Nova Scotia’s Major Unsolved Crimes Program, which offers up to $150,000 for tips leading to an arrest and conviction in certain cases.

Anyone with information about Cameron's death is asked to contact police.
