A student has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault after a stabbing on a school bus outside Saint John High School.

Two students were stabbed with what friends say was a knife as the bus approached the school just before 9 a.m.

Students say one of the victims was reportedly stabbed in the neck.

Police and paramedics were called to the school after the victims – two boys, aged 16 and 17 - entered the building with injuries.

“I came to school, saw cop cars everywhere,” says student Ryan Thompson. “I thought someone was getting arrested.”

The victims were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

“The two students that were injured were in the building. The suspect was arrested on the bus,” confirms Sgt. Chuck Elgee of the Saint John police.

“One of the students is at the hospital and the other was treated and released.”

Police were on the scene, investigating the incident for most of the morning. They say it’s too early to comment on a possible motive for the attack.

Hours later, students were still trying to make sense of what happened.

“That’s pretty crazy, I mean it’s right outside the school,” says student Elijah Vautour. “I don’t know what to think.”

“It was obviously something stupid – a confrontation that just escalated to the point that someone had a weapon to stab with,” says student Erik Olmstead. “People jumped in and it was just a bad situation.”

Counselors were made available to students Monday.

Police say the 17-year-old suspect appeared in provincial court Monday afternoon to answer to the aggravated assault charges.

He did not enter a plea but was remanded for a 30-day psychological assessment.
