MONCTON, N.B. -- The Canadian Red Cross is helping tenants who have had to leave their homes after a fire this morning damaged a small three-storey apartment building in Moncton, N.B.

The agency says three tenants were getting assistance through their insurance, but 10 other people were getting emergency help from the Red Cross and local groups including the Salvation Army, Blankets for Moncton and Big Hearts Small City.

The fire at 3 South St. broke out around 7:30 a.m. and the Red Cross says the flames were largely confined to one apartment on the third level of the building.

But the Red Cross says there was water or smoke damage in other areas of the building.

All tenants in the building had to leave temporarily because the electricity was shut off, but the relief agency says it's hoped that most people will be able to return to their homes as soon as the cleanup and repairs are done.

The Red Cross say there were no reports of injuries.
