CAPE JOURIMAIN, N.B. - A 12-year-old girl from New Brunswick is looking to set the Guinness World Record for the youngest person to swim across the Northumberland Strait.

Brooklyn Douthwright of Riverview will attempt the 15-kilometre crossing from Cape Jourimain, N.B., to Borden-Carleton, P.E.I., on Sunday.

A news release says Douthwright originally planned to make the crossing when she turned 13, but feels she's ready to take on the challenge.

She says she was inspired to attempt the crossing by 14-year-old Cali Bruce of Truro, N.S., the youngest swimmer in last year's event.

Douthwright's swim is expected to take about six hours.

She's one of 54 swimmers participating in The Big Swim fundraiser for the Bridadoon Village facility in Nova Scotia, a camp for children living with a chronic illness, chronic condition or special needs.
