Two men are facing a slew of charges after a two-vehicle collision in Dartmouth sent three people, including a baby, to hospital.

Halifax Regional Police responded to the crash on Highway 118 at Exit 12 just before 6 p.m. Monday.

Police say a dark-coloured car was travelling inbound on Highway 118 when it was struck by a red SUV. Witnesses told police the SUV had been speeding and swerving across both lanes before the crash, which sent the car into the ditch.

Police allege the driver of the SUV stopped at the scene and the occupants switched spots in the vehicle before driving off.

A police officer was travelling inbound near Dartmouth Crossing when he spotted the SUV leaving from a stop on the side of the road. The officer stopped the SUV a short time later on Highway 118.

Both men inside the vehicle were arrested for impaired driving.

The 38-year-old female driver of the car and her two passengers, a 66-year-old woman and an eight-month-old baby, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The baby has since been assessed and released from the IWK Health Centre. Both women remain in hospital.

A 23-year-old Truro man is due in Dartmouth provincial court Tuesday to face charges of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

A 25-year-old Millbrook man is due to appear in Dartmouth provincial court Tuesday to face charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, refusing the breathalyzer, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, breach of a court ordered recognizance, breach of probation and driving while disqualified.

Highway 118 was reduced to one lane as police investigated the incident and cleared the scene. It has since reopened to traffic.
