A 19-year-old man and 14-year-old boy are facing weapons charges after they were allegedly caught trying to sell a sawed-off shotgun at Halifax Transit’s busiest bus terminal.

Police responded to the Dartmouth bridge terminal Monday afternoon. When they arrived on scene the officers located two suspects and arrested them without incident.

Police say the officers found a sawed-off shotgun inside a duffle bag the younger suspect had been carrying at the time.

“There’s a couple of things that are concerning in this file, in this incident,” says Const. Pierre Bourdages of the Halifax Regional Police. “We have the age of one of the accused…14 years old is extremely young, and as well, it’s a very public area.”

The suspects, both from Dartmouth, each face charges of careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of a weapon obtained by commission of an offence, weapons trafficking and possession with the purposes of weapons trafficking.

Police have identified the older suspect as Frederick Schofield.

Halifax Transit says there is extensive security at the bus terminal, but some passengers say it’s not adequate.

“I’ve never seen a security guard here, ever, and I’m here twice a day,” says one transit user.

“Maybe they should patrol a little more,” says another.

There are two security guards stationed at the bus terminal between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and one guard is on duty around the clock.

“We do have over 65 cameras on site, cameras at the facility,” says Halifax Transit spokesperson Tiffany Chase. “All of the buses that go in and out of the terminal are all equipped with multiple cameras that take camera angles from inside and outside the bus as well.”

The cameras aren’t monitored around the clock in real time, but the footage is used to help police.

Police say it wasn’t the cameras that helped them catch the teens, but rather a tip from a witness.
