Veterans have scored a victory in their fight for better food at the Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building in Halifax.

Veterans Affairs has decided to send a dietician to the facility to assess the menu after receiving complaints about the quality of the food from veterans and their families.

NDP Veterans Affairs critic Peter Stoffer paid a visit to the Camp Hill kitchen earlier this week and returned today for a follow-up. He says he is pleased with the review.

“The reality is there are 175 vets and 175 taste buds,” says Stoffer. “It’s not always possible to satisfy all the vets and I want them to know that I’m going to be coming in here, stopping in and checking every once in awhile just to see how everything is going.”

Camp Hill staff say everything is made on site and from scratch. They also say the menu is reviewed regularly and they accept feedback after each meal.

A dozen new food items are also being tested and could soon be added to the menu.

That’s good news for Jack Walsh, an 84-year-old Second World War veteran who has called Camp Hill home for two years.

“The talks are ongoing. This won’t happen overnight, we know that.”
