Thousands of Maritimers are still in the dark after Sunday’s nor’easter brought rain, freezing rain, snow and high winds to parts of the region.

As of 2:30 p.m.. Monday, 2,211 Nova Scotia Power customers were still off the grid, with most outages concentrated in and around Pictou County, Antigonish and Cape Breton.

Maritime Electric tweeted an update at 2:40 p.m., saying roughly 8,000 Islanders were still without power. The utility says it could be late Tuesday or even Wednesday before power is fully restored on P.E.I.

The storm prompted delays and cancellations at some Maritime airports Monday morning, as well as closures and delays at some schools.

In Nova Scotia, Mulgrave Memorial Education Centre, Felix Marchand Education Centre, Cyrus Eaton Elementary School, Pugwash District High School and Thorburn Consolidated School were closed due to power outages.

On P.E.I., schools in the Montague, Morell, and Souris families of schools were closed for the day. Donagh Regional School was also closed. All other schoolsopened one hour later than normal. 

Holland College’s Georgetown Campus was also closed for the day.

All ferry crossings between Wood Islands, P.E.I. and Caribou, N.S. were cancelled due to weather conditions along the Northumberland Strait.

Ferry crossings between North Sydney, N.S. and Port aux Basques, N.L. were cancelled due to weather conditions in the Cabot Strait.
