A young mother and her baby were sent to hospital with minor injuries after being hit by a car in Halifax Monday night.
The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Lacewood Dr. and Willett St. in the Clayton Park area of Halifax.
Halifax Regional Police say a 17-year-old girl was crossing with her seven-month-old in a stroller when they were struck by an oncoming car.
Police say the teen was crossing in a marked crosswalk, but was crossing while the light was red. She and the baby were struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by an 18-year-old female.
Investigators say the driver had the right of way and a green light.
“She was trying to catch a bus that was pulling into the Lacewood Terminal there,” says Halifax Regional Police Const. Pierre Bourdages.
The teen and baby were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released. The driver was not injured.
Police say it is too early to say whether charges will be laid. They are hoping to interview more witnesses and are also looking for surveillance video.
Halifax Regional Police have responded to 52 vehicle-pedestrian collisions so far this year. Officers have been passing out reflective armbands to pedestrians at busy intersections in the city in an effort to curb the number of collisions.
Some people say the intersection where the teen was struck is especially dangerous because there is lots of traffic and people hurrying to catch the bus.
“There was one earlier in February at that very same intersection where someone had their foot run over,” says Bourdages.
A plan is in the works that may make the intersection safer in the future. The Lacewood Terminal is going to be moved behind the Canada Games Centre, where there is less traffic.
