Police say they are treating a fire that destroyed a wood pellet plant in Nova Scotia’s Lunenburg County as suspicious.

The fire started at the Cookville plant around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Multiple fire crews were called in to tackle the blaze, which almost damaged adjacent buildings.

“It had the possibility of burning four buildings,” said Northfield Fire Chief Darren Mulock. “One is a total loss, well two is a total loss and two was saved.”

Empty poultry barns were among the buildings saved by fire crews.

Truckloads of chicks were on their way to be delivered to one of the barns, but thankfully they arrived after the fire had started.

There were about three loads of wood chips inside the unit, which was destroyed.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
