HALIFAX - Ten-digit dialing comes into effect in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island on Saturday.

Residents of the two provinces will have to include the 902 area code followed by a seven-digit phone number when making local calls.

Calls made without an area code will be allowed to go through until Nov. 16, but may be interrupted by a recorded reminder message.

After that, 10-digit dialing will become mandatory.

On Nov. 30, the new area code 782 will be made available in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Residents with the 902 area code will not be affected by the change.
