Around 5,500 chickens are dead after a fire at a hatchery and egg-grading business in Waterville, Nova Scotia last night.

The building that caught fire was about three-hundred feet long and according to Kevin Ernest from the Waterville Fire Department, “the fire consumed about 150 feet of that building.”

The facility is owned by Atlantic Poultry. They haven’t commented on how the loss will affect business or what will happen to the surviving chickens.

Ten fire departments and around 80 firefighters in Kings County were called in to help. No one was injured in the fire and the investigation into the cause continues.
