A man is in hospital and a suspect in custody after a brazen shooting took place on one of Halifax's busiest streets Thursday afternoon.

Police were called to the 6300 block of Quinpool Road - a busy stretch of road in a commercial area - shortly around 2:15 p.m. after hearing reports of gunfire in the area.

Police believe a small group of people fired a number of shots in a parking lot in the area, then jumped into vehicles and fled in different directions.

When they arrived on the scene, investigators knew someone had been hit but they were unable to locate the victim right away.

"However, our victim was located in a vehicle that was stopped further eastbound on Quinpool road," confirms Halifax Regional Police spokesperson, Const. Brian Palmeter. "He's been taken to hospital with injuries that are believed to be non life-threatening at this time."

Within half an hour, police had tracked down a second vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting. They say at least half a dozen police vehicles converged in an area across the harbour, in Dartmouth, near the intersection of Victoria and Albro Lake roads.

Police arrested one suspect, who is now in custody, but a second suspect fled the area on foot. Police are still searching for the second suspect and investigating the incident.

"They're indicating at this point that, based on the information they have right now, that it's not believed this was a random incident," says Palmeter.

Investigators seem to be focusing their search on two areas in the parking lot on Quinpool Road.
