A 51-year-old Cape Breton man who has entertained children for more than 20 years is facing four sex-related charges involving a person under the age of 16.

Dale Rancourt, also known as Klutzy the Clown, is facing two counts of sexual interference, one count of sexual exploitation and one count of sexual assault.

“The last charge is as a person in authority, did touch the same person for a sexual purpose. These are very serious charges," said Crown lawyer Sheldon Nathanson.

Police say the offences are alleged to have happened between July 15 and October 16, when he was arrested.

Court documents say the female victim is 15 years old.

There is a publication ban ordered on some of the details in the case because the allegations involve a minor.

Rancourt appeared in court Monday afternoon. He has been remanded back into custody at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre and is due back in court Tuesday for a bail hearing.

The Crown is opposing his release.
