A wildlife park in Cape Breton is doing its part to save a bear cub that was found wandering alone on a highway.

“Little Bear,” the one-year-old cub, was brought in to Two Rivers Wildlife Park in May by a pair of men.

Weighing only seven pounds at the time, he has since been nursed back to health by a local vet.

"He kind of diagnosed him with a small case of pneumonia, so we treated him appropriately and he made a great recovery," said Two Parks staff member Jarrett Lewis.

But Little Bear is not out of the woods yet. Park staff fear they might have to put him down if they can't build him a proper cage.

To build a new enclosure, the park needs to raise about $40,000.

"His cage is small, it's not appropriate for him. We're hoping to build a bigger cage,” said Lewis.

"He obviously needed help, and they gave it to him,” said park visitor Sheri MacDonald. “I think they deserve some help to try and keep him healthy, let him grow to be big and strong."

In just a matter of days, Little Bear has already received nearly 10 per cent of the donations he needs. Wildlife park staff hope the donations keep pouring in.

“The phones are going non-stop, emails coming in, people are suggesting non-stop,” said Lewis.  They want us to do a GoFundMe page. They're doing e-transfers.  They're coming out to see the baby bear, which is the most important part."

The goal is to set him up in a cage of his own and eventually bring in a female bear his size, giving Little Bear a mate.

"With the progress we've had so far, just over one day, I'm very optimistic that we're going to reach our goal pretty quick," said Lewis.
