RCMP in New Brunswick have laid charges against a 27-year-old man after a break in at the St. George, N.B. detachment.

Police say the building was empty at the time of the break-in, which occurred at 3:40 a.m.

Officers had finished their shifts just minutes before at 3:30 a.m.

Mounties responded to the detachment after receiving a 911 call.

They say most of the windows were smashed and some equipment inside the building was damaged, along with a number of vehicles in the parking lot.

"This isn't something that we see very often, if at all,” said RCMP spokesperson Const. Jullie Rogers-Marsh.

“There is damage to a lot of the windows in the detachment. There is some damage inside as well. To some equipment as well as police vehicles and personal vehicles that were parked in the parking lot,” she said.

Nolan Joseph LeBlanc, 27, of Saint John was arrested outside the detachment.

LeBlanc appeared in Saint John provincial court on Wednesday to be formally charged with breaking and entering and mischief.

More charges are expected.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing next week.

Police say the damage is being assessed and it doesn’t appear that any private or police data was accessed.

"Our investigation has led us to believe that there was no access to any personal or security information,” Rogers-Marsh said.

Police say it appears he simply wanted to cause damage to the property, but are not offering an explanation as to the suspect’s motive.

The RCMP will be working out of their cars or other detachments while the damage is repaired.
