CTV Atlantic reporter Kayla Hounsell has returned after being on assignment in Africa. Kayla was on the ground in South Sudan for one month working with an international media development organization called Journalists for Human Rights.

JHR’s mission is to empower journalists to tell human rights stories effectively and objectively. In the Spring of 2013, CTV National News Chief Anchor and Senior Editor Lisa LaFlamme travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo with JHR. Since then, CTV News has partnered with JHR and committed to sending three journalists to African countries.

In February 2014, CTV Vancouver’s Ethan Faber travelled to Sierra Leone. Kayla was selected as the journalist for the second placement. She lived in Juba, South Sudan’s capital city, working one-on-one with local television journalists and conducting workshops on journalism and human rights reporting.

This is Kayla’s second trip to Africa. In 2006 she travelled to Rwanda with Ottawa’s Carleton University to help mentor journalism students.
