A 50-year-old cyclist died Thursday after he was struck from behind by a truck in New Brunswick.

Police say the man was cycling southbound on the paved shoulder of Highway 11 in Shediac Bridge around 2:15 p.m. when he was hit by the pickup truck.

He died at the scene from his injuries.

Police arrested an 80-year-old man at a residence in Scoudouc a short time later, for leaving the scene of a collision.

He was held in custody overnight and was released this morning on conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

The victim is from British Columbia and had been cycling across Canada. Police have not released his name pending notification of his family.
