A New Brunswick cyclist has died following a hit and run in Moncton.
Police say the 58-year-old Dieppe man was biking on the Lewisville Road, near the intersection of Dowd Street, when he was struck by a vehicle just before 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital where he died.
Police say the driver of the vehicle left the scene of the crash but was arrested a short time later in connection with the incident.
“A 23-year-old Dieppe man was arrested in relation to this incident,” says Codiac RCMP Const. Damien Theriault. “He was later released. At this point we have not established what charges will be considered in this case.”
Adam Crossman lives close to the accident scene and he and his fiancé left home to see what was going on after they heard what sounded like two cars colliding.
When he arrived on the scene, he says there were some disturbing clues as to what happened.
“There was no helmet,” says Crossman. “The best way to describe the impact of it is, he had one shoe there, his body was there and his other shoe was about 50 yards down the road.”
Police say an RCMP collision reconstructionist and forensic identification specialist are assisting in the investigation to determine what caused the fatal crash.
The victim’s name has not been released.
