Dalhousie University is apologizing for the behaviour of one of its faculty members, calling his mock striptease during an on-campus event “inappropriate.”

“We did receive some complaints that came in yesterday for concerns around some inappropriate behavior,” said Brian Leadbetter, spokesperson for the university.

The dance was performed by two men, one of whom is a Dalhousie faculty member, at an event organized by the School of Health and Human Performance on Friday.

“We're aware of the incident, we're certainly looking into it, and on behalf of the university I certainly would apologize to anyone that was in attendance at the event,” said Leadbetter.

Dalhousie's website says it was a 50th anniversary dinner and dance, as part of the school’s homecoming festivities.

About 100 students, faculty, staff and alumni were in attendance.

“The event was not sanctioned by the university, it was an event that was co-ordinated through alumni activities,” said Leadbetter.

While many students seem unaware of the incident, some call it embarrassing.

“I kind of am shocked that it happened on campus, it's something that you don't normally hear of from the faculty,” said student Jeffrey Connors.

“It's not appropriate to be in your underwear in front of the public,” said student Tanaka Shumba.

Problems at the Dalhousie School of Dentistry in 2015 culminated in a report that highlighted a culture of misogyny, sexism and homophobia at the university.

Leadbetter says the Dalhousie has been working hard to create a respectful community since then.

“We have moved forward very deliberately over the last two years with a strategic priority on diversity and inclusiveness,” said Leadbetter.

The dean of the faculty of health professions has been informed of the complaints and will be speaking with faculty.

It's not clear whether anyone involved will face disciplinary action.

The university wasn't able to provide many details about the context of the incident, so it's not clear what else was happening at the event or how the striptease fit in.
