The victim of a shooting in Dartmouth, N.S. has died from his injuries.

Investigators say 24-year-old Raymond Floyd Peters of Dartmouth was shot in the chest several times during an altercation in the city's north end Monday night.

Police responded to the area of Primrose Street and Pinecrest Drive around 5:30 p.m. after a fight between several men started in the backyard of a home in the area.

“The victim was shot at that location, made his way to a Jackson Road address, where a resident called 911 reporting that the victim was there,” says Const. Pierre Bourdages.

Peters was taken to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, where he passed away Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators were back on the scene Tuesday, using laser analysis to trace the path of bullets fired into nearby buildings.

One woman, who did not want to be identified, says violent crime has been on the rise in the Dartmouth neighbourhood in the last few years. She is even thinking about selling her home and moving away.

Other area residents were quick to voice their concerns about the latest incident and crime rates in the area.

“Who says, last night…that’s not me, or one of my kids on their way home from their friend’s place,” says neighbour Cathy Cooper.

“Sometimes it’s not safe to walk around here, you know, even if you are minding your own business,” says local contractor Tony Danisawski.

No arrests have been made in the case but police are looking for a suspect whom they say fled on foot after the shooting.

He is described as a black man in his mid-twenties. He is roughly five-foot-eight with a medium build and wore a navy blue hoodie and black pants at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police at 490-5020.
