Police in New Glasgow are investigating a case of arson after a popular playground was destroyed by fire.

Firefighters and police officers responded to the fire at the South End Playground, or “Rubber Park,” on Sutherland Street just before 9 p.m. Thursday.

They say a suspect, or suspects, started the fire on a piece of the plastic playground equipment which destroyed the structure.

Police say it will cost thousands of dollars to replace the damaged playground equipment.

“This is the second arson at this playground facility within a year. The last fire that caused substantial damage was back in December of 2011,” says Const. Ken Macdonald. “This fire is an irresponsible act of vandalism that causes great loss to the community.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
