Residents of Dominion, Nova Scotia say they are not giving up efforts to save their provincial park from the ravages of Mother Nature.

Dominion Beach has been repeatedly battered by storms. Its shoreline is eroding, sections of a popular boardwalk have been destroyed and tons of rock has washed ashore.

The province is preparing what it envisages as a viable plan for the park's future.

Darren Bruckschwaiger, a resident who advocates for the restoration of the beach, says more short-term fixes are not the solution.

"Every year spending $40,000 or $50,000, which I consider to be a waste of taxpayers money, to just go down there and fix it up for a month or two and it's washed away in one storm. It's just not right," says Bruckschwaiger.

Visitation figures from the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Association show Dominion is the most popular of six guarded ocean beaches in Cape Breton.

Nearly 5,700 beachgoers swam, strolled or enjoyed its bird sanctuary last year.
