Julie Hawkins says donations to help a man who was viciously attacked in North Sydney last week continue to pour in.
More than $18,000 has been raised for 48-year-old Shawn Curtis Jack since Hawkins set up an online account on Friday.
“The donations, I thought they might start to slow down, but I keep checking and they’re still coming in every few minutes, so people are still donating,” says Hawkins.
The donations include a $300 contribution from eight-year-old Carlie Harris.
“She wanted to do a lemonade stand, so we set it up and it turned out pretty good,” says Carly’s father, Blair Harris. “We had a lot of activity here and a lot of people showed up. She wanted to donate all her money to Shawn Jack.”
“We’re feeling happy about it and positive, but I just hope he makes a full recovery so he can enjoy it and know what everyone is doing for him,” says Hawkins.
Jack remains in serious condition in a Halifax hospital after he was attacked behind the Atlantic Superstore on King Street on July 14.
Police say employees found the man in the parking lot and called 911.
Jack was taken to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with serious head injuries and later transported to a Halifax hospital.
A total of six people now face charges in connection with the incident. The latest arrests were made at an apartment building in North Sydney.
James Darren Clarke, 34, and Gordon William Bobbitt, 47, have been charged with obstruction of justice. Bobbitt lives upstairs in the building while Clarke lives on the lower level.
“The man upstairs was pretty quiet, kept to himself,” says resident Linda LeBlanc.
Police say a wrench and bandana were also seized from an apartment in the building. Investigators believe they may have been used in the attack.
Jennifer MacLeod, 22, of Boularderie faces charges of aggravated assault, wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence, and breach in connection with the incident.
Kyle William Nichol, 25, of Sydney Mines is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence and two breaches.
A 16-year-old female is facing charges of aggravated assault and wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence in connection with the incident.
Investigators have also issued a Canada-wide warrant for a 22-year-old Sydney Mines man. Cory Blinkhorn is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and wearing a disguise while committing an offence in connection with the incident.
Police say Jack is originally from the Truro area and often camps behind the store during the summer months with his dog. Chico is being cared for by the SPCA in Sydney.
