More than 50 affordable apartment units are under construction in Saint John, N.B.

The Steepleview Developments apartment building will have one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, as well as barrier-free units.

The building will also include a daycare and community rooms.

David Hickey, the minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, says the daycare can take 120 children and it is already full.

“The demand is here. We've seen the power of what a non-profit building like this can do with other examples like the Wellington in Saint John,” he told CTV News.

“We know that this is the ticket to getting out of the housing crisis … I'm relieved that we have developers willing to step up and do it. And I'm relieved that we have developers willing to step up and do it in neighbourhoods that are desperate for it.”

The province says 28 of the 56 units will receive rent supplements from the New Brunswick Housing Corporation.

The federal, provincial and municipal governments are spending more than $20 million on the project. Contributions were also made by the Diocese of Saint John and the Knights of Columbus.

“The City of Saint John remains committed to collaborating with all levels of government and community partners to address the pressing issue of affordable housing,” said Saint John Mayor Donna Reardon.

“The inclusion of affordable units within the Steepleview development exemplifies these shared values and efforts. We are delighted with the significant investments announced today.”

The building is under construction at 35 Cliff St. and is expected to be completed by next fall.
