Flames and thick black smoke darkened the skies over Dartmouth, N.S. Sunday.

A fire destroyed two homes next door to each other.

Flames broke out on Lindenwood Terrace off Baker Drive just before 3:30 p.m. It appears fire from one roof jumped to the roof of the house next door.

Smoke could be seen from across Halifax Harbour. It took about 35 firefighters roughly an hour to get the blaze under control.

No one was inside the homes at the time and there were no injuries.

Fire crews saved a dog from one of the houses.

Half a dozen surrounding houses were evacuated and more than 1,600 people in the area were without power for several hours.
