TOBIQUE, N.B. - Members of the Tobique First Nation in western New Brunswick have voted to approve a multi-million dollar land claim with the federal government.

The band office reports the vote was 864 in favour of the deal, while 186 people voted against it.

Chief Ross Perley and other members of the band council could not be reached for comment.

The $39.2-million settlement is in exchange for more than 4,000 hectares of land taken by the federal government more than 100 years ago.

Each member of the band will receive at least $13,500.

About 20 per cent of the total payment will be earmarked for various projects in the community.
