The future of the iconic Halifax Forum is a lot more secure.

After a marathon debate lasting much of Tuesday, Halifax council rejected the advice of city staff to close the 86-year-old building and build a new, four-pad arena elsewhere.

 The decision surprised some councillors.

“I'm actually kind of surprised. I thought it was going to be a closer vote. So I think it's just really a strong response back from the public,” says city councillor, Jennifer Watts.

Council eventually decided to ask city staff to come up with a plan to renovate the building, which is a designated heritage building.
