Disturbing allegations of sexual assault have been made against a student at a Halifax-area school. The alleged perpetrator and the two victims are all children.

Two students at Elizabeth Sutherland School in Spryfield, which takes students from grades primary to nine, say an older student sexually assaulted them.

There is no indication at this time of the nature of the alleged assaults, where they are alleged to have been committed or when.

However, they were brought to the attention of the principal on Jan. 24.

"That information was shared with police on the same day and it's our understanding the police are actively investigating it at this time," confirms Halifax Regional School Board spokesperson Doug Hadley.

Const. Kathryn Willett says the investigation is now being handled by a special crime unit that has been trained and is experienced in dealing with children who may have been sexually assaulted.

Police have not revealed the sexes of the complainants or their ages, but a child must be 12 years old to be charged with a criminal offence in Canada.

"If the investigation yields enough information to actually lay charges, yes the suspect is of legal age to be charged for the incident," says Willett.

She also says police have spoken to the families of the children involved, but not to the children themselves.

Roughly 300 children attend the school.
