A Halifax paramedic is facing multiple charges over allegations he tampered with vials of controlled narcotics.

Police started investigating after Emergency Health Services in Halifax reported finding a discrepancy in their internal system that manages controlled narcotics.

Following a three-week investigation, police stopped an off-duty paramedic yesterday afternoon outside an EHS base on Wilkinson Avenue in Dartmouth.

They seized narcotics and arrested the man.

Following his arrest, police searched a home on Lawrence Street in Halifax before 8 p.m., where they seized evidence related to the investigation.

Zachary Dewar, 25, is charged with breach of trust, mischief, theft under $5,000 and possession under $5,000 in connection with the case.

He is also charged with possession of a controlled substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Dewar is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court on April 23.

EHS confirms he has been let go and his paramedic's licence suspended.
