HALIFAX -- It's too early in the season for Santa to be making his rounds, but it seems the Grinch is already out and about.

Police are trying to identify two Grinches suspected of stealing a decorated Christmas tree from the lobby of an apartment building on Grandhaven Boulevard in Halifax.

Apartment resident Sharon Robinson admits her Christmas spirit has taken a bit of a hit this year.

"Unbelievable, would be my words," she said. "I thought, 'Oh, my God, do people stop at nothing?' It's a shame because you really feel like, you know, there's still good out there, but it's almost like you can't trust anybody anymore."

The entire incident was captured by the building's surveillance cameras.

It was just after 6 p.m on Monday when two young women wait it out behind security doors in the entryway until someone leaving lets one of them in.

Moments after the elevator doors close, one woman goes to work, grabbing the 7.5-foot Christmas tree in the lobby and dragging it out the door.

The tree falls apart, so she makes a second trip, but fortunately, the other woman is there to hold the door.

It's believed a third woman was waiting in a car outside, and in no time, they're gone -- along with the tree.

"The bulbs, the ribbons were all over the place," said Steve Snow, the building's manager. "I went outside there, and they were blowing around the parking lot."

The tree is valued somewhere around $700 when you factor in professional decorating costs.

Investigators have released photos taken from surveillance video in the hopes of catching the alleged thieves.

The first suspect is described as a woman between the ages of 35 and 45. She has a slim build and long, brown hair. She was wearing a pink and red track suit and a dark-coloured tuque.

The second suspect is described as a woman between the ages of 20 and 30. She has long, dark hair. She was wearing a pink top, black leggings, and a black coat with fur on the hood.

Anyone with information about the suspects or the incident is asked to contact Halifax Regional Police.
