MARION BRIDGE, N.S. – A gruesome discovery on the Mira River has had members of the Cape Breton Regional Police Marine Unit investigating since sunrise.
On Friday night two people discovered a floating hockey bag along the shoreline.
Inside the bag were human remains.
Police are remaining tight-lipped about the situation but they have revealed the remains belonged to an adult female.
An autopsy is being conducted to help determine the cause of death.
Water currents suggest the bag may have been abandoned from the Marion Bridge but police can't say what happened.
"We wouldn't rule out anything at this time, but knowing the Mira River, and the length of it, you know, to have some speculation on how the bag got there would be just that," said Staff Sergeant Stephen Mackinnon.
The find has left residents in the area uneasy.
"Most people don't lock their doors but everybody's going to lock their doors now and make sure that they have to sit outside and watch their kids in their own yard because you don't know who's around anymore," said Natasha Felch.
Police in the area admit they have never dealt with a discovery like this.
They do believe they will have more information as the investigation continues this weekend.
