A murder case against notorious crime figure Jimmy Melvin Jr. will skip a preliminary hearing and head straight to trial.

Melvin Jr. was arrested in July and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the murder of 34-year-old Terry Marriott Jr. in 2009. Melvin Jr. is also charged with attempting to kill Marriott Jr. in December 2008.

Another man is facing charges in connection with the attempted murder and actual murder of Marriott Jr.

The Crown has filed a preferred indictment on the charge of first-degree murder against Melvin Jr., resulting in the case proceeding directly to trial at the Nova Scotia Supreme Court.

Trial dates are expected to be set on Jan. 14.
