A Lakeside man has been charged with homicide and numerous other weapons offences after the death of 20-year-old Jason Dockrill.

Halifax RCMP say they arrested 52-year-old Michael Dockrill Friday morning. They have failed to comment on the relationship between the two men, other than to say they were both residents at the home, outside of Halifax. But neighbours tell CTV News that the pair were father and son.

Michael Dockrill is facing numerous charges including manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, careless use of a firearm, unsafe storage of a firearm, pointing a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The charges stem from a home invasion and fatal shooting incident in June.

Police say they responded to a break-and-enter in the 1300 block of St. Margaret's Bay Road around 10:30 p.m. on June 12.

They discovered that two masked men had broken into the Dockrill's home and that one of the residents had been shot. Jason Dockrill was found dead when they arrived.

Police say they believe Jason Dockrill struggled with one of the robbery suspects, and at one point, shots were allegedly fired by Michael Dockrill. His son was struck and killed and police believe the intruders then fled the scene, empty-handed.

At the time of the shooting, neighbours told CTV News they believed Michael Dockrill was trying to defend his son against the home invaders.

Police arrested Michael Dockrill and took him into custody shortly after the incident, but he was later released.

Police said in June that they also seized a rifle, a significant amount of cash and marijuana inside the grey bungalow during their investigation.

Court records indicate Michael Dockrill was previously charged with assault, uttering threats and mischief, but he was never convicted.

Michael Dockrill will appear in Halifax Provincial Court this afternoon to face the charges.

Police were not able to track down the suspects involved in the home invasion.
