An overnight fire in downtown Bathurst has damaged or destroyed at least four buildings.

Canadian Red Cross communications director Dan Bedell says the fire broke out on King Avenue near Main Street late Friday night.

Bedell says the fire affected several businesses and displaced tenants on the upper levels of three 3-storey buildings.

Bedell says the Bathurst office of the Canadian Red Cross is located in the wing of one of the affected buildings, but it’s unclear whether the office was damaged.

Canadian Red Cross says most tenants appear to have found temporary places to stay with family and friends.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
