A Nova Scotia man has been convicted of attempted murder in the stabbing of his father last spring.

Robert Charles Rogers of Yarmouth County was also found guilty Friday night of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in the May 5 incident in Summerville.

Charles Rogers, 68, was stabbed in the throat in his home and almost died.

His 49-year-old son will be sentenced on Dec. 9.

The father testified during the five-day trial that his son stabbed him in an unprovoked attack as he was sleeping on the couch.

But Robert Rogers said he had to defend himself when his father came at him with a gun.

He claimed that after he got the gun away from his father, he shoved him and his father cut himself after falling over a coffee table.

The Nova Scotia Supreme Court jury deliberated for about nine hours before returning the verdict.
