HALIFAX -- Police and Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team are investigating the death of a man who fell from a balcony in Halifax.

Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of a disturbance at an apartment building on Carrington Place in the Clayton Park area around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say a man and woman who knew each other had gotten into an altercation, and that the man fell from the balcony.

SIRT says, when police entered the apartment, they spotted a man on a balcony. The man then went over the balcony, falling to the ground below.

Police tried to help the man, but SIRT says he died at the scene from his injuries.

The man had not been identified.

Const. John MacLeod says the investigation is still in the early stages and police are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing, so it is also involved in the investigation.

Editor's note: Police initially said the incident happened at 6:30 p.m. Monday. They later issued a correction, saying that police responded to the scene at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
