A 22-year-old man accused of killing a Dartmouth cab driver more than three years ago has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

Sergei Kostin, a 40-year-old native of Ukraine, was killed in January 2009 after he picked up a fare at a convenience store in Dartmouth.

His cab was found burned out in North Preston a few days after he disappeared, although Kostin’s body wasn’t recovered until April, about a kilometre away from his car.

Chaze Lamar Thompson of Dartmouth was charged with first-degree murder in Kostin’s death in January 2010.

Jury selection for the murder trial got underway this morning in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Halifax, where Thompson is scheduled to stand trial over the next six weeks.
