It’s becoming more common to see dogs at stores and businesses in Halifax.

Some are like the Walmart greeter at the door, while others just pop in while their owners shop. However, at a jewelry store on Quinpool Road, one pooch has found himself full-time employment.

Righteous is a fixture in the store window of Ash Jewelry.

Ash Rie owns the store, but Righteous is the boss.

The goldsmith works with the Bull Terrier cross perched behind him on his chair.

“It's his chair right? And he wants to sit there and I need a place to work, so I work there and he doesn't want to give up the chair,” says Rie.

The six-year-old pooch has been coming to the store since he was a puppy. The business is open seven days a week and Righteous takes his spot in the window every day.

But Rie doesn’t own Righteous; his employee Rachael Simms does.

Simms even drops her pooch off on her days off, so Rie can spend more time with him.

“It was love at first sight,” says Simms. “They've been inseparable since the day I brought him in until today.”

“I can't wait to come to work in the morning just to play with him,” says Rie. “I come to work at 5 a.m. when she drops him off and stay till 8 p.m. when she picks him up. He spends the whole day with me.”

Rie spends his days working, while Righteous watches intently.

“We've even tried to bring the other chair back there so the dog could sit on one chair and Ash on the other while he's doing his goldsmithing, but the dog just doesn't have it that way,” says Simms.

Rie doesn’t mind, as far as he’s concerned his friend is worth his weight in gold.

“He's very quiet, he's very gentle,” says Rie. “The only thing you get out of him is kisses and hugs.”

So if you’re passing by Ash Jewelry and stop to inquire how much is that doggie in the window – the answer is priceless.
