A 32-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a shooting at a Halifax bus shelter Sunday evening.

Halifax Regional Police responded to a bus shelter in the area of Connaught and Chisholm avenues at 11:30 p.m.

“Upon arrival, our officers found a 32-year-old man who had been shot and was taken to hospital for what was believed to be life-threatening injuries,” says Halifax Regional Police Constable John MacLeod.

Police haven’t released any other details, including the man’s name and condition, as well as details about a possible suspect.

Connaught Avenue was closed to traffic between Windsor Street and Regent Street overnight and Monday morning as investigators remained on scene. The scene was released and the street reopened around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

By mid-afternoon, police didn't have updates to provide.

“Because it's very early stages in our investigation, our investigators are looking into all possibilities and speaking with everyone they can in relation to this incident to try and determine exactly what it was that happened,” says MacLeod.

Several people who live in the area allege they heard multiple gunshots.

The incident is one of two shooting incidents to occur on Sunday. In Hammonds Plains, there was a case of shots being fired in the early morning hours of Sunday. Nova Scotia RCMP say the case is not believed to be random and no one was injured.

In January, there have been four confirmed incidents of shots being fired in the Halifax area; however, Sunday night’s shooting on Connaught Avenue is the first to leave a victim seriously injured.

The news of a shooting at a bus shelter has left Halifax’s transit-using public shaken and concerned for their safety.

“Yeah, I don't feel too comfortable,” says transit user, Craig Putt.

“It makes you feel unsafe,” says transit user, Kathy Dobson. “Whoever got shot, I'm hoping he gets better.”

Meanwhile, police say it's too early to say whether or not the shooting is random.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Halifax Regional Police.
