ESKASONI FIRST NATION -- The CEO of Crane Cove Seafoods in Eskasoni, N.S., is recovering Monday night after being shot in his home.

RCMP say at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home in Eskasoni.

Police say a 53-year-old man was shot through the window of the home. He was injured and transported to hospital.

Leonard Denny -- who has been identified by Chief Leroy Denny -- had surgery Monday morning and is recovering from his injuries.

"He called me to aid his situation," said Chief Leroy Denny of Eskasoni First Nation. "He told me he was shot."

Chief Leroy Denny lives just down the street from where the shooting took place. He says the victim is his first cousin and he was first to arrive at the scene.

"I took him out of the house and drove him to the ambulance station," said Chief Leroy Denny. "From there, I was still on the phone with 911. Apparently he was shot from the outside of the house."

RCMP say at 12:30 a.m., they received a second report of a shots fired in the community, but determined the report to not be substantiated.

Residents were initially asked to remain in their homes with doors locked and report any suspicious activity to police. However, just before 8 a.m., police said they now believe the incident was isolated and there was no longer a risk to the public.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Eskasoni Chief Leroy Denny said all businesses under the umbrella of the band will be closed March 1, which includes all schools, the band office, health centre and fitness centre.

Police say they do not believe the incident to be random. Anyone with information is asked to contact police immediately.

Chief Leroy Denny says so far no arrests have been made, but he's asking his community members to come forward if they have any information about the incident.

"I just couldn't believe it," he said. "I was trying to believe it, but it's crazy how this happened here. I'm just hoping they find the individual who did it."
