Officials are investigating whether mysterious odours that shut down a middle school in Nova Scotia stem from work that was done on the roof earlier this year.

Students at Highland Consolidated Middle School in Westville have been attending classes at the Nova Scotia Community College in nearby Stellarton for more than a week.

The middle school remains closed while the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board investigates complaints from staff and students about the odour problems.

Ron Marks, a representative for the school board, says the odour was particularly strong after work was completed on the roof during March break.

He says workers will cut out a section of the roof to inspect it.

The provincial Labour Department has also reported three areas of mould in the school, though they were classified as minor.
