Dozens of people were in Fredericton on Sunday to raise money for a couple that was struck by an SUV in June while they were out on their motorbike.
Kendra and Mike Burden are still recovering in hospital, and the family says they still have a long road ahead. Mike’s leg had to be amputated below the knee.
"He's doing as good as you can expect,” says Mike’s father, Michael Burden. “He's been through several surgeries. We’ve got no idea what's ahead."
Robert Shannon, 40, has since been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
Mother Against Drunk Driving was at Sunday’s event to support the family.
"For the community to come together and help the family out is huge because they need support not just today, not just a month from now, not just a year from now – they need continued support for years," says Danielle Cole, spokesperson for MADD.
The money raised from the fundraiser will go towards the couple's three children.
“The family has expenses, they have three children, they've been staying with family but even that's extra mouths on a family that already has several children," says Cole.
Michael Burden says although the local biking community may be relatively small, its heart is big.
"I knew Fredericton was a close town, I had no idea how close."
