Residents in Lower Sackville, N.S. are expressing their frustration after vandals targeted a park built and maintained by community volunteers.

Acadia Park features carriage lights, benches, walking trails and a gazebo, with many items being donated by Good Samaritans who want to make their community a better place.

One of the latest acquisitions is a shiny new steel fence erected a month ago, but it was damaged when someone deliberately drove into it with their vehicle.

“As far as we can tell, it appeared that somebody with a truck backed up against the fence and pushed it over,” says Peverill. “Because, just for the heck of it, I guess.”

Whoever did it did it slowly, so as not to damage their own vehicle, leaving many park users shaking their heads.

“It’s unfortunate and costs them a lot of money,” says one park user. “A lot of volunteers work on this place, my aunt included, so it’s sad to see.”

“A lot of people put a lot of time and effort into this and then someone comes along and has no respect for it,” says resident Rod Arsenault.

The local Lions Club pledged $26,000 to pay for the fence, and is now on the hook for repairs too.

“We’ll pay for what’s necessary … we committed ourselves to pay for the fence, and we will do that,” says Dale MacDonald, president of the Sackville Lions Club.

Peverill and other volunteers will reinstall the damaged section of the fence once it’s fixed.
